While
the placement of PE (pressure equalization tubes) in a
child's eardrum when reccuring ear infections cause continual
fluid build-up is a somewhat controversial topic, doctors
and parents know just how helpful it can be. What it mainly
offers is improvement in hearing at a critical time in
a young child's development. Fluid in the ear canal can
cause significant hearing loss for many months. Since
a child must be completely still for this short procedure
it is done in a day surgical center because a general
anesthesia is required. Knowing
what to expect reduces anxiety for parent and child alike.
And after the surgery, re-reading this book also helps
a child continue to process the event in a positive way.
